From our Chairman
Inheriting Bayfield in 1960 I have lived over (in Glandford Mill) or by (in Bayfield Hall) the Glaven river for the best part of 44 years. In that time running a fish farm for 10 years, fishing for trout, walking the dogs every day along its banks and watching out for signs of wildlife have made me very familiar with its changing face. I have to say changes not always for the best. The water rails, water voles and the occasional corncrake, the otters, (even a young seal) and drumming snipe, have disappeared under the fast changing agricultural practices and water drainage policies. Thankfully I believe that we have recognised the harm being done to this dear little river in time and with good support from all concerned we can retrieve the situation. Already steps to include buffer strips, no or minimal dredging, have seen a marked improvement in the last two to three years. There is a tremendous amount to get on with and that is why I am so pleased to be a small part of the River Glaven Conservation Group. Here we have a body of concerned people embracing all aspects of the river and together we can make a difference.
